Inner City Legal Centre launches Safe Relationships Project

In another Australian world first for intersex people, Sydney’s Inner City Legal Centre (ICLC) has announced the launch on Wednesday 1st July of their Safe Relationships Project.

The launch invitation states:

The Safe Relationships Project (SRP) is an initiative of the Inner City Legal Centre (ICLC). The aim of the SRP is to provide a new domestic violence advocacy, information and referral service.

The SRP will have three specialist services, one service for Same Sex attracted people, a second service for Transgender and Transsexual people and a third service for Intersex people. In this respect the Safe Relationships Project will be the first of its kind in New South Wales, offering specialist court assistance and support for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Transsexual and Intersex communities.

The SRP will assist clients in accessing legal representation and applying for Apprehended Domestic Violence Orders (ADVOs) to help end the violence they are experiencing.

OII Australia attended the Inner City Legal Centre (ICLC) launch of their Safe Relationships project on the evening of July 1st, and we made some photographs of people there with their choice of posters.

Here are our favourites. We’d like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who attended, and all the wonderful people who supported intersex people by mentioning the word ‘intersex’ during their presentation or by appearing in these photographs! Julie McCrossin did a wonderful job of MCing the night.

Our thanks go out to Yasmin and everyone else at ICLC.

It was, Nancy. It was terrific to see you there as well as so many others who are open to hearing about intersex and who are using inclusive language. It was a very productive evening and there is much to do now in following up what happened last night. From the evidence, the tipping point has been reached and we hope that all organizations and human rights efforts will become intersex-inclusive from now onwards.
